Suspected diaper thief headed to trial

FOX CROSSING, Wis. (From WBAY) -- One of two suspects accused of stealing 100,000 diapers from United Way Fox Cities will head to trial in May.

Jason Havel and John Forbes two former employees of Valley Packaging are facing felony theft charges.

Monday Havel's case was scheduled to go to a jury trial May 23.

Forbes will be in court May 15.

Following the theft, United Way Fox Cities says it's moving forward on what's next for the community -- focusing on the 400,000 diapers that were collectively donated by Amazon, Proctor and Gamble, and Kimberly-Clark and the encouragement that came with it.

"I think there's many things United Way does for our community, make it a stronger community, and ultimately we're excited to be part of that," said Aric Melzl, Kimberly-Clark Huggies Brand Director.

The generous diaper donations restock their shelves and will fulfill the need in the community for about a year.

That means United Way Fox Cities won't need to hold its annual Dollars for Diapers Campaign, instead giving the organization time to get acquainted with its new warehouse and work with agencies to reach new communities.

"It's going to allow us to take that same time to talk about diaper need in the community and get people really involved in hands on activity with the diaper bank," said Nanci Micke, United Way Fox Cities.

That includes repacking the diapers so they can get into the hands of those in need, maybe helping even more people than the organization planned to.

"Really hope so. That's always our goal, you know, in all the programs we do we're always hoping to help more families," said Micke.

United Way Fox Cities says any additional donations are welcome and will be put to use.
