Box Lake Lumber Products secures five years of timber in Kootenay region, B.C. | Interfor, timber, Canada,

Box Lake Lumber Products has won a non-replaceable forest licence in British Columbia that will give the company access to timber for five years. The licence covers about 445 truckloads of logs a year and will support production of split-rail fencing used in parks, farms and home gardens. The site is about 50 kilometres from Nelson, and the award will add timber supply for a value-added wood manufacturer in the Kootenay region, according to the Ministry of Forests.

The company will use the licence to reach unlogged wood on steep mountain slopes and to salvage timber damaged by recent wildfires or pests. The volume comes from unlogged timber in Tree Farm Licence 3, which Interfor holds.

Box Lake Lumber Products said the licence will help secure logs to keep its mill operating. The company makes split-rail fencing and ships its products across North America and Europe.

The licence was offered through a competitive process aimed at value-added wood manufacturing companies in the Kootenays. The opportunity was identified by the Value-Added Accelerators, a provincial initiative focused on expanding British Columbia's value-added wood manufacturing sector.

British Columbia has also expanded timber access for value-added manufacturers through BC Timber Sales. In 2024, BC Timber Sales created the Value-Added Manufacturing Program to set aside wood fibre for small and medium-sized forestry companies in the province, and in 2025 the program increased to 20% of BC Timber Sales' available timber sale licence auctions.

The province has more than 900 value-added wood manufacturing facilities. The sector contributed $1.4 billion in gross domestic product in 2024.
