GREENVILLE, S.C. (From news reports) - The Gantt Fire Chief Brady Norris is calling for other agencies to help respond to a recycling facility fire in Greenville.
The chief said crews were called to the fire at Sonoco Recycling on White Horse Road around 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, March 24. Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke coming from the outside of the front of the building.
Smoke could be seen from several parts of the county including I-85.
Officials said due to the facility being a recycling company, the building is filled with paper products, cardboard which made it extremely difficult to access the building.
The city of Greenville said both the Greenville City Fire Department and Donaldson Airport deployed their Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting trucks. These trucks have the ability to spray water, foam and dry chemical agents to fight high-intensity fires.
According to the chief, two firefighters were injured responding to the scene. One of the two was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay.
The fire is contained to the building and not spreading outside. The chief said the next step of action is using heavy material to pull the building apart and make entry to clear out combustible materials.
Chief Norris said this is a several hour, maybe even several day, event.
Crews from all over Greenville County are responding but Chief Norris said is requesting for more manpower.
Chief Norris said 14 fire stations, along with 95 firefighters from 3 separate counties, are at the scene.
Around 50 firefighters from surrounding counties will be working from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., he said.
At this time, there are no air quality concerns for the surrounding community, Greenville County Emergency Management said.
