IRVINE, Fla. (From the Ocala Star Banner) -- A log truck reportedly headed to a Georgia-Pacific facility rolled over on County Road 318, west of Interstate 75, on Monday afternoon, spilling logs on the road and sending the driver to a hospital in Gainesville with serious injuries.

According to Florida Highway Patrol trooper Raul Umana the driver of the Freightliner "lost control on the curve." The driver was identified as Vincent Alexander, 44, of Ocala.

The crash happened at 2:45 p.m. It was 1/2 mile west of the Orange Lake/Irvine exit off of Interstate 75, and near the intersection of County Road 225. There is a winding curve in that area.

The 1988 Freightliner was traveling east and was loaded with logs, which spilled on the road and nearby. Both lanes of CR318 were blocked.

Callie Colburn, a secretary with Harrison Logging on CR 318, said her company had contracted with Alexander Enterprises, which was the name on the truck.

A man identified by authorities as the owner of the truck refused to comment

JoAnn Harrison of Harrison Logging said the load of logs was likely headed to Georgia Pacific in Palatka. She said she was told that a nurse who was traveling behind the truck helped the driver out of the cab.

A number of friends and family members of Alexander's were at the scene. Two dogs that had been in the truck with him were being watched over by members of the group.

It appeared that truck began to skid about 150 feet before it came to rest half on and half off the roadway in the center of the curve.

Umana said he was aware of a part, which may have been from the tractor-trailer rig, lying in the road at the west entrance to the curve but would not speculate or comment on any involvement it may have had in the crash.
