Norsk NukleƦr Dekommisjonering has agreed to acquire certain properties at the Norske Skog Saugbrugs industrial site in Halden, a transaction valued at approximately NOK 720 million ($74 million) net. The Norwegian government agency will use the properties to support the decommissioning of the Halden research reactor, which has been idled since 2018, according to Norske Skog.
The properties include areas north of Tistedalsgata and the machine hall for paper machines 4 and 5. The decommissioning work is expected to span 25 to 30 years, with the handover of the properties scheduled for the second half of 2028. Norske Skog Saugbrugs will lease the properties until that time and has related obligations during the transition period.
The transaction is structured as an asset sale and remains subject to customary conditions and public approval of the consideration amount. Norske Skog expects to recognize an accounting gain of NOK 320 million ($33 million) in the Q1 2026 and an estimated NOK 330 million ($34 million) in the Q2, recorded as other operating income. Net payment of approximately NOK 720 million ($74 million) is anticipated in the Q2 2026.
The company continues to evaluate a rebuild of paper machine 6 for the production of SC magazine paper and kraftliner, with an update expected during the Q2 2026.
Norske Skog is a producer of packaging paper and publication paper across four mills in Europe.
