DS Smith Starts Up ANDRITZ Stock Preparation Line with Europe's Largest FibreFlow Drum Pulper

DS Smith has successfully started up an ANDRITZ stock preparation line and reject treatment system at its mill in Porcari, Italy, including Europe's largest FibreFlow drum pulper.

Alessandro Romagnolo, Project Head at DS Smith, says: "The successful start-up of this line is an important milestone for our Porcari mill. The project demonstrates the strong cooperation between our team and ANDRITZ. With the new system now in operation, we are able to efficiently process a wide range of recovered paper grades and reliably produce high-quality packaging papers from 100% recycled fiber."

The line is part of a production system for packaging papers made from 100% recycled fiber for the fast-moving consumer goods and e-commerce sectors. Designed for a capacity of 1,650 t/d, the system processes a wide range of recovered paper grades. At the heart of the line is Europe's largest FibreFlow drum pulper. The unit is also the 300th FibreFlow drum pulper delivered by ANDRITZ worldwide. It enables gentle pulping combined with efficient removal of coarse contaminants, supporting stable operation and consistent fiber quality.

The system is complemented by screens and LC-cleaners that ensure high stock quality and low energy consumption, even under varying raw material conditions. The reject treatment system includes a shredder and reject compactors for efficient processing of rejects from pulping and coarse screening. The ANDRITZ scope of supply also comprised basic and detail engineering, installation supervision, commissioning, and operator training.

DS Smith (dssmith.com) is a leading provider of sustainable fiber-based packaging worldwide, supported by recycling and papermaking operations. It plays a central role in the value chain across sectors including e-commerce, fast-moving consumer goods, and industrials.
