What a mess

In my column last week, we asked, "Have you ever inherited a mess?"

100 percent of respondents said Yes.

Then, we asked, "Do you have any additional advice for fixing messes beyond what was in the column?"

Here are the responses:

>Avoid playing the blame game. Here is where we are, so set the plan on where to go. Everything else is internalizing, "what can I do to make things better."

>You were spot on.

>Not at this time.

>Unless you know the new boss well, get to know him/her and his/her wants and needs.

>Be a safety advocate.

>Getting to know how the production process and the people on all shifts that run them cannot be overemphasized. After getting acquainted during a shift, stay in touch by "managing by walking around". Some of the information you gather there may be big clues to sorting out the mess.
