I had no idea when I wrote last week of the effects of change in prime ministers in Great Britain that we would see results so soon. We may think that terrorism is a long way from making pulp and paper, but if it disrupts the normal function of business it will soon be affecting us all.

The Thompson Private Letter successfully launched on 1 Jul 07. (This is a shameless promotion) If you have not yet subscribed, we have advertisements here and on PaperMoney that allow you to do so.

Some have written me in other venues concerned about buyouts in our industry by private equity firms. Granted, this may cause some inefficient facilities to close, but it is a matter of only when they close, not if. It is better to get on with things at facilities with current and future profit possibilities than to drag out the death of the thoroughly obsolete. Look at the letters column above. Facilities have been changing hands and been revamped for a very long time. It is not about to stop now.
