Concerning I can’t believe I am suggesting this…

Halo Jim,

Long time to contact you. I can not believe either you where suggesting that. In no way you mentioned the simple world of competitively, and that paper makers or Bullfighters are different from Old soldiers, we never die nor Fade away. Just think, but THINK HARD of the automotive Industry. They predicted the extinction of Pistons Engines 50 year ago, and they are still running like in LIKE THE OLD days, AND WITH UNBELIVABLE MILIAGES RATES. The difference is only \"Computer assisted process control\" put one of this systems, they cost nothing this days an operate in windows (Good Bless Microsoft), and an old obsolete mill will revive with Market oriented NEW Business Plan. I have done so wit a bunch of Kids, guided by old timers, and they start playing Nintendo paper making and make money. The other issue I learned in the North west was of a Mill shut down and the workers went an ask for financial support to one old school fellow that have made money on construction, He gave the support provided they owned an run the mill and use state of the art technology on process control, and Market Oriented Business plan. And it is the most efficient and happy mill I have seen. They stay in town and are growing. So I am, I learned, I have \"chingoncientos\" years old, my pension is like $3 dlls have to keep working and enjoying \"making Money\" \"Making Paper\" I designed Build and start up the best GB mill in the world Zero effluent an is making a lot of money when I was retired, and are now designing and Building and start up the..best tissue mill in America the same way, A bunch of Kids guided by old timers and playing Nintendo as Process Control. And NO GRANTS subsidies etc, just plain old fashion American captivity and ingenuity. God Bless Microsoft an America VALE (Don Quijote Expression)

Thank you for your comments. It has been a while since I heard from you—don’t be a stranger! I don’t think all old paper mills deserve to live. Width, balance speed, and drying capacity are very hard (expensive) to change. I don’t feel the same way about pulp mills, unless the process is so obsolete and the environmental liability is so great as to make continuing on the site uneconomical.

Hi Jim,

I hope that you are in good health. I enjoy your communications -- particularly your comments about how universities might help to alleviate the problems communities suffer when mills shut down. It is somewhat puzzling to me that even though the US has a mature, healthy and well-developed system of paper-related higher ed. programs, these programs are rarely consulted or even acknowledged by industry persons or communities when problems arise. There are, of course, a few exceptions to my generalization, but not many. Keep up the good work.

Marketing, Bill, Marketing. If one does not communicate vigorously these days, they are lost in the din.

As well as I know you, you still amaze me. How ever do you continuously think this stuff up?

Oh the trivia….. By the way Jim, when I occasionally visited GM in Minneapolis while working at Tama and Rittman, I got to see some of their historic packages on display in their visitor center. I believe the Lou Gehrig box was one of those on display. It was badly faded and yellowed but might not have been the first Breakfast of Champions box as there were several others that predate the Lou box, but they were not adorned with a particular person’s likeness. I believe it was lithography that was used to print the carton.
