I hesitate to provide the following musings, recognizing they may perpetuate the perception of arrogant Americans. However, my intent is not to be critical, but rather cautionary, bringing to our attention and reminding us that all countries do not treat all issues the same, and, no matter where you live, you need to keep this in mind when doing business across borders (and, yes that even means doing business with us here in the USA). Three matters came to my attention last week that involve three countries of vital importance to the pulp and paper industry worldwide.

Brazil. The latest airplane crash in Sao Paulo has brought to the world’s attention the condition of the Brazilian air transportation system. It seems to appear, that no matter what airline you fly, entering Brazilian airspace may be slightly more risky than flying in places with the highest standards in the world (which I understand to be the EU).

China. The ongoing problems with the safety and security of foodstuffs for humans and pets that are being exported from China remind us that everyone does not have the same standards. China has even executed the head of its equivalent to the US Food and Drug Administration, but one still wonders how pervasive the problems are. There seems to be a danger of a trade war breaking out over these matters, which will be disastrous for us all.

Russia. The dust-up with Britain and the tit-for-tat retaliatory diplomatic actions there leaves one wondering, if they did not already, about the respect for rule of law and due process in Russia.

Again, I am only being cautionary and attempting to remind us that everything is not the same everywhere. We often become so familiar with the laws and procedures in our own home country that it never occurs to us that others do things other ways.
