GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (From the Green Bay Press Gazette) -- A birthday or anniversary calls for cake, even if the honoree is a 115-year-old facility.

Georgia-Pacific delivered on the celebration for its Day Street mill Tuesday. Originally the Northern Tissue Paper Mill, the plant on Green Bay's north side roared to life for the first time on March 29, 1901, and continues to operate to this day.

The mill was started by seven Wisconsin men who pooled $70,000 to build the plant. In its first year, the mill employed 25 people and shipped 800 tons of sanitary tissue. The tissue took its name from the company, Quilted Northern, a brand which continues to be sold today.

Now, the Day Street mill produces 70,000 tons of paper each year and employs 275 men and women. Many of its original buildings, such as the gatehouse and main office, remain in use today.
