Monadnock Paper Mills Earns TÜV OK Home Compost Certification for Paper-Based Durable Card Solution

Monadnock Paper Mills, Inc., the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States and a leader in premium, environmentally responsible paper solutions, announced that its Compostable Card has been awarded the TÜV OK Home Compost certification.

The certification verifies that the material meets rigorous standards for safe decomposition in home composting environments--an important milestone for brands seeking to replace single‑use plastics with renewable, fiber‑based alternatives.

"Compostable Card represents a breakthrough in technical design and performance for applications where paper replaces plastic and must deliver durability and humidity resistance," said Rajan Iyer, Vice President of Research Development & Technical Services. "Achieving TÜV OK Home Compostable certification reflects forward-thinking engineering that expands what fiber-based materials can deliver while still meeting sustainability goals."

Developed as a versatile, durable alternative to plastic, Monadnock's Compostable Card is a paper-based bright white engineered board made from 100% post-consumer recycled fiber (PCRF) and FDA food-contact-compliant materials. Engineered for demanding environments, this beautiful print material delivers moisture resistance and temperature stability while still breaking down in home composting systems when properly disposed of, enabling use across applications such as: bakery closures, paper gift and loyalty cards, and durable signage. This product enables further innovation in fiber-based applications, where durability, sustainability, and end-of-life recovery are increasingly essential.

"Industry estimates suggest that billions of plastic bakery bag closure clips are produced annually in the United States. Even modest reductions in that volume could prevent millions of pounds of plastic from entering the waste stream," said Molly Rosenthal, Director of Strategic Business Development. "We're demonstrating that paper-based alternatives can meet performance expectations while helping brands meaningfully reduce plastic use."

The TÜV certification follows Monadnock's recent EcoVadis Platinum rating for the second consecutive year and last year's Mastercard CEC certification for Gift Card products. All Monadnock products are manufactured under a third‑party‑certified ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The company is proud to be Forest Stewardship Council certified by Preferred by Nature. Products are manufactured carbon neutral through the investment in emission reductions certified under the GHG Clean Projects Protocol (VERs). All Monadnock products are made with Green-e certified 100% renewable electricity (RECs).

"This certification demonstrates that brands no longer have to compromise durability to meet sustainability goals," said Julie Brannen, Director of Sales and Sustainable Solutions. "It demonstrates that companies can transition away from plastics without compromising functionality."
