Officials: Sonoco Spartanburg County, South Carolina facility fire contained but could smolder for days

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (News release) -- The Una Fire Department said a business fire has been contained following an issued with a baler machine on Thursday morning, June 4.

As of 2:30 p.m., officials said the fire at Sonoco Products Company on Caldwell Road has been contained but it will smolder for several days. Nearby resident will see and smell smoke in the area.

Crews initially reported that several units were called to the fire around 4:44 a.m. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

Chief Jeff Hadden said the building is about the size of a football field and packed with mostly cardboard. The roof of the building collapsed but no injuries were reported.

The company released the following statement at 1:16 p.m.:

Sonoco will have a 24-hour fire watch set up for the coming days, officials said.
