Paper mill reopening in Manistique, Michigan after 2015 shutdown

MANISTIQUE, Michigan (From the Escanaba Daily Press) -- A paper mill in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that was shut down in 2015 is reopening soon.

According to the Daily Press, the Zellar family, which also owns Zellar Excavating, worked with other investors to purchase and reopen the Manistique mill as UP Paper LLC. Plans call for the mill to be back open starting Monday.

The reopened mill will employ about 90 people to start. Day-to-day operations will be handled by UP Paper's President and CEO Lars Dannberg. He says he came to the Upper Peninsula in August with hopes of bringing back the mill, calling it "a little diamond in the rough."

FutureMark Manistique closed the plant following efforts to keep the mill going didn't work. The mill was a significant area employer.
