BAILEYVILLE, Maine (From news reports) -- The parents of 26-year-old Allen Hornberger, the second victim who died following the Woodland Pulp chemical incident, are sharing who he was.
"It is with unspeakable sadness that we must confirm the loss of our beloved son Allen. For the past three weeks, we have been at his bedside in the ICU, praying for a miracle that never came," his Kathryn Reilley Hornberger and Al Hornberger Sr. said in a statement. "It is inconceivable to lose him in such a way, when there are still so many questions surrounding what went wrong inside that plant.
Allen was a process engineer in the technical department and worked at the mill since September 2025.
"Allen was our only child and the light of our lives. He was a kind and brilliant 26-year-old who had his whole life ahead of him," the Hornbergers wrote. "The world is a dimmer place for the loss of his genuine heart and extraordinary mind. For now, we ask for privacy, compassion, and space to grieve."
The leak also killed University of Maine student Kasie Malcolm.
"It's a devastating loss for the families which were so very sorry for that," Mill spokesperson Scott Beal, said.
The U.S. chemical safety board said concentrated sulfuric acid may have mixed with other chemicals to form hydrogen sulfide, which is a highly toxic gas.
"It has also had a significant widespread impact across the mill population," Beal said.
U.S Chemical Safety Board and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are currently investigating. Prior to the gas leak, the mill had 14 OSHA violations between 2017 and 2024.
"These agencies have been on site they have opened up investigations and its ongoing," Beal said.
Beal said there are resources for employees who need support through its employee assistance program and human resources department.
"We're very glad that we have these professionals available to assist with the emotional impact of any of our employees," Beal said.
The CSB did not share updates on its investigation. Mill's spokesperson says they are fully cooperating with OSHA and CSB as their investigations into the incident continue.
