WALLULA, Washington (From news reports) - Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) is dismissing rumors that its Wallula containerboard mill will close in the coming weeks, according to company officials.
PCA Deputy General Counsel Mark J. Romaniuk said Tuesday there are "no plans for any material change" to the facility. He added that the company remains pleased with the mill's current operations and its ongoing presence in the Walla Walla area.
The clarification follows a major reconfiguration announced in December 2025, which included the permanent shutdown of the No. 2 paper machine and associated pulping facilities.
While those changes resulted in approximately 200 job cuts, officials say the shift to a single-machine, recycled-paper model was designed to ensure the site's long-term viability. PCA said it's moving some production to other lower-cost facilities within the company.
