Universal Forest Products to acquire Idaho Western

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Universal Forest Products Inc. said it is acquiring an Idaho-based distributor of products for building materials retailers and the manufactured housing and recreational vehicle industries.

The Grand Rapids Township-headquartered lumber products company is buying Idaho Western, Inc. for $11.5 million in stock. The deal is expected to close July 1.

The Nampa, Idaho-based company supplies customers in the Northwest with products ranging from lumber and plywood to siding and doors. The company, which has been in business for 38 years, has annual revenues of about $21 million.

The acquisition follows on the heels of Universal's announcement earlier this month, it is buying assets of Tampa, Fla.-based treated lumber manufacturer, Robbins Manufacturing Co., which maintains six facilities in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.

Universal's Caldwell, Idaho operation, which supplies lumber products to the manufactured housing and recreational vehicle industries, will be consolidated into Idaho Western.

"This strategic acquisition will allow us to bolster our foothold in the manufactured housing and retail markets by expanding our product offering and our geographic reach," said Matthew J. Missad, Universal's chief executive officer, said in a statement.

The publicly-traded holding company that provides capital, management and administrative resources to subsidiaries that supply wood, wood composite and other products to three robust markets: retail, construction and industrial.
