Södra and the construction company SSEA will build 12 apartments in Malmö in a new pilot project in sustainable construction. The project, which is carried out on behalf of MKB Fastighets AB, aims to halve the climate impact by, among other things, using cross-glued wood.

The construction industry accounts for approximately 40 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions in the world. Building in wood is a way to reduce the climate impact of construction, which more and more people are seeing the benefits of. The pilot project in Malmö includes building an apartment building comprising 12 apartments with a frame in cross-glued wood (KL-wood). KL wood has several advantages over other wood materials, which makes it particularly suitable for climate-neutral construction. The low weight in relation to the strength means, among other things, fewer transports and easier assembly.

"Our raw material comes from the family forestry in Southern Sweden, the KL wood is locally produced and has the market's lowest climate impact. The fact that we, together with SSEA, are building a pilot project for EIA is an important and concrete step towards achieving more climate-neutral construction," says Ola Landqvist, business developer at Södra Building Systems.

EIA's ambition is to, with the project, which goes by the name Rapsen 2, develop the company's competences in sustainable construction and create learning about building with a frame made of KL wood . The goal is for the project to release a maximum of 207 kg CO2/sqm and thereby reach under the climate arena LFM30* target limit value for housing, a project with a low climate impact. In the next step with carbon storage taken into account, the project will likely halve emissions compared to the portfolio. Recycling is also something that will be applied in the project. Preparatory work has begun and already at the turn of the year 2024/2025 the apartments will be ready for occupancy.

The project is carried out in collaboration with SSEA, which has great expertise in construction.

* LFM30 is a local initiative in Malmö that aims to create a geographical game plan to speed up the climate change within the construction sector. The goal is for Malmö to have a climate-neutral building and construction sector with net zero CO2 emissions by 2030. After that, the aim is to create a climate-positive sector by 2035.
