MASSACHUSETTS (From news reports) -- A global company that manufactures paper packaging products is preparing to close one of its facilities in Massachusetts and lay off 91 people.
Smurfit Westrock will permanently close its factory at 365 Audubon Road, Wakefield starting on May 18, according to a Massachusetts Workers Adjustment Retraining Notice filed with the state on March 18.
The Wakefield facility manufactures corrugated boxes and packaging for regional customers, according to the company's website. It has additional Massachusetts locations in Springfield and Devens.
Smurfit Westrock operates more than 500 facilities and employs more than 97,000 around the world, according to its website. The business was formed in 2024 when European company Smurfit Kappa Group merged with North American firm WestRock Company.
A spokesperson for Smurfit Westrock said in a statement Monday morning that the closure was part of the company's "optimization efforts" and its production work would be moved to other facilities, but did not provide a reason for the closure.
