The Swedish Energy Agency grants Södra´s feasibility study on sustainable aviation fuel production

SWEDEN (News release) -- In May 2018, Södra together with strategic partners signed a letter of intent regarding a feasibility study on local sustainable aviation fuel production in Småland, Sweden. Now, the Swedish Energy Agency announced that the application has been granted, which means that the study goes from word to action.

In a joint effort to increase the availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Nordics, KLM, Södra, SkyNRG, Fores, Växjö Municipality, Småland Airport and Luleå Technical University (LTU) signed a letter of intent regarding a feasibility study for the development of SAF in the region.

The Swedish Energy Agency has granted the application from the consortium and will help fund the feasibility study.

The study aims to develop specific knowledge regarding the feasibility of local SAF production in the province of Småland and identify the most promising supply chain set-up for the area. The support of the Swedish Energy Agency allows the consortium to take the first step in setting up a local supply chain.

"Forests can play a key role in the transition to fossil-free air transport. Together with our partners, we now have the expertise required to move forward. Combined with financial support from the Swedish Energy Agency, Sweden can lead the development of new technologies to solve a major challenge," said Henrik Brodin, Business Developer and Project Manager for "A Fossil-Free Södra."

The project "Från flis till flygplan i Småland" will pave the way for a regional SAF supply chain in the province of Småland based on sustainable, forest-based feedstocks. It will provide a solid basis for specific knowledge and decision making regarding the feasibility of local SAF production.

The project is a collaboration between The Swedish Research Institute (RISE) and Växjö Energy together with the consortium behind the letter of intent. RISE has the administrative responsibility of the project, but each and every one involved contributes both financially and with expertise.

The project, which will progress over 20 months starting 01/11/2018, is divided into six areas of responsibility; technology inventory, analysis of raw materials and integration opportunities, technology-economic analysis of local production, demand and distribution as well as business model analysis and roadmapping. Depending on area of expertise, the parties are assigned different responsibilities. The support from the Swedish Energy Agency amounts to SEK 2.6 MSEK. In addition, the parties enter their own funds.
