Will AI dumb people down?

We are in the period where AI is the biggest buzz word with all the glamour. However, relying too heavily on AI programs will have negative consequences.

When I was in high school, the TI-81 calculator was very popular, and some math teachers would focus heavily on students using that. Programming a TI-81 calculator made things easier but didn't teach long-hand math.

Using Chat GPT and other AI programs for thinking, problem-solving and writing will cause a decline in critical thinking and creativity.

In an article from NewScientist, it states that "A growing number of psychologists, neuroscientists and philosophers worry that ChatGPT and similar generative AI tools will chip away at our powers of information recall and blunt our capacity for clear reasoning."

In an article from the Wall Street Journal, it states that "A June study from MIT Media Lab suggests that using ChatGPT to write essays results in cognitive debt, a fancy way to say that artificial intelligence makes you dumb."

While AI has its place, people shouldn't become dependent on it for basic thinking. There's a real fear for the younger generations becoming heavily dependent on AI.

According to an article from Collegeboard, it states that "College Board finds AI use is more prevalent than ever in America's high schools. Recent advancements of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools, like ChatGPT, have contributed to the surge in AI's growing use in high school settings."

Professor Rose Luckin gave a keynote speech at the Cambridge Summit of Education and was asked whether education is ready for AI. You can learn more by clicking here.
